Read more about citadel's history ..
The citadel dates from 1524 and is a semicircle-shaped tower. Later all the plateau was surrounded by a wall. In 1529 during the battles between King Ferdinand and Janos I. to the throne of Hungary, the city was occupied and destroyed by Petru Rares. Its walls were rebuilt, but after some time were destroyed in a fire.
In 1625 the city was rebuilt and in this same period was dug and 81 m deep pit in the courtyard of the fortress. Italian quadrilateral fortification with bastions in the corners, above which towers were built for defense, had only one entrance accessible through a drawbridge. In 1688 the inhabitants of Brasov were seeking refuge here from the battle with Habsburgs. In 1690 the imperial armies were established in the city and have opressed it many years in a row. In 1773 Joseph II. ordered the restoration of the fortress, and after nine years he offered it for sale. The city did not buy it, so it became a prison for the Turkish and French prisoners. In 1817 the city was visited by the Empress Karolina, in 1848 was occupied by the Bem troops, and in 1894 by the armies of the czar.
In the 40's it was restored but for a period of time stood unused. Nowdays, here it's running a restaurant with terrace
